THE ORIGINS 1926 COLLECTION
A CENTENARY CELEBRATION OF GOLF HERITAGE

Presented by the artist, Anthony Oakshett
Where Art Preserves History
The Origins 1926 Collection brings together one of golf’s most significant historical paintings with a companion volume that explores the remarkable people and events portrayed within it.
Created for collectors, golf clubs, museums and institutions with a deep appreciation of golf’s heritage, the Collection combines fine art, historical scholarship and museum-quality craftsmanship in a unique commemorative project marking the centenary of one of the defining moments in the evolution of the modern game.
Every element of the Collection has been produced to the highest standards, reflecting both the artistic ambition of the original painting and the historical significance of the subject it records.
The Moment
The year 1926 occupies a special place in golf history.
It marked the coming together of many of the leading players, administrators and visionaries whose influence helped shape the ‘modern game’ during the twentieth century.
This was a period in which the ‘modern game’ had matured beyond its nineteenth-century origins, born out of the ascendancy of the ‘gutty’ in the 1850s.
The game had become increasingly international in outlook, more professionally organised, supported by influential clubs and institutions, and followed by an ever-growing audience around the world.
The Origins 1926 Collection celebrates that remarkable generation and the enduring legacy it created.
The Painting
For many years I have specialised in creating historically researched paintings that seek not only to portray people but also to tell their stories.
Every individual appearing in this composition was carefully researched before being included. Clothing, likenesses, setting and historical detail were studied to ensure that the finished work would be both artistically compelling and historically authentic.
I chose the title for the painting as The Origins of the Ryder Cup, Wentworth, 1926
Originally conceived in the mid-1990s, this painting has become recognised as one of my most important historical works and today forms part of the collection at Wentworth Club.
The Limited Editions now represent the first opportunity for collectors and institutions to acquire this remarkable work in museum-quality reproduction, presented directly by me as the artist and copyright owner.
The Companion Book
Origins 1926
by Alastair Loudon
Built on his foundational writing, as published in The Gentry Links Trilogy (Grant Books Ltd, 2023) the companion book explores the lives and achievements of the individuals portrayed in the painting and places them within the wider story of how the ‘modern game’ came of age and matured during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Drawing upon original research and specially commissioned artwork, the book offers an historical context that enriches the painting and transforms the Collection into something greater than a work of art alone.
Together, the painting and the book provide collectors with an exceptional combination of artistic interpretation and historical scholarship.
